Historic On-Site Auction: Contents & Real Estate

Bob & Sallie Connelly will conduct an On-Site Estate Auction of the contents of 59 E Main St, Washingtonville, NY 10992 on Saturday, July 14, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. with a preview at 9:00 a.m. ; the real estate will sell at noon. We are selling the home and contents for the Estate of Joan D. and Edward J. McLaughlin III. Everything, except the real estate, is being sold without reserve, with a 10% Buyer's Premium.

The Jaques and McLaughlin families are historically important in Orange County, where John Jaques Sr. (1790-1876) operated a boot factory from 1818 to 1837. In 1835 he planted his first vineyard, which his sons took over and operated until its sale in 1886. Now known as the Brotherhood Winery, it is the oldest winery in the United States.

John Jaques Sr.' daughter, Sarah married Nathan McLaughlin, and their son, Edward J. McLaughlin I, opened a General Store in Washingtonville in 1879. Edward McLaughlin II married Helen Burnett, whose grandfather was a Revolutionary War officer and an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati. Many of the items from the Jacques and McLaughlin families remain intact, and were passed on to Joan and Edward McLaughlin III.

Selling without reserve are furniture, including a cherry cupboard with Tiger Maple butler's desk drawers, a tilt top candle stand and other stands, a music cabinet with paw feet, tables, chests, and Sarah Jaques' pine desk; clocks, including a banjo clock with carved wooden feathers for arms and a mahogany Federal tall case clock, c.1810; accessories, including a pewter flagon by Boardman, double wheel coffee grinders, E.J. McLaughlin's 1894 cash register, sleigh bells, early wooden telephones, spool cabinets including a Landers, Frary & Clark 4-drawer cabinet, brass milk scales, and Indian arrow heads; and stoneware, including 14 pieces decorated with birds and flowers, and a 1.5 gal crock by I.V. Machett incised with poem, d.1857.

Other items are military & guns, including a framed George Washington banner, early Smith & Wesson pistols, an 1820 militia sword (broken leather scabbard), Civil War letters, and a 1750 Spanish Colonial sword; advertising & wine memorabilia, including J. Jaques [bootmaker] sign, 2 reverse painted glass signs for Jaques Brothers Winery, c.1880, and 19th century winery records and recipes; railroad items, including a stone mile marker from the Erie RR, locks, keys and buttons from many railroads, transfer and railway tickets, telegraph equipment, and a Santa Fe conductor's badge; and toys & dolls, including 2 Tuck-Comb dolls, c.1830, 2 Armand Marseille dolls, dancing sand toys, and game boards.

Also in this historical auction are lamps, including a Ripley finger lamp with brass handle, 2 Japanned miner's lamps, and many oil lamps; glass, china & pottery, including an 1824 Utica Erie Canal blue jug, 30 piece of Flow Blue, a Weller No 240 lamp, cut glass, an RS Prussia tea set, and over 80 pieces of Rosalinde china by Theodore Haviland; clothing & fabric, including a coverlet, signed by Sophia Moffat, attributed to the workshop of James Alexander, braided rugs, children's boots, c.1830, and a trunk of 19th century clothes; and silver, including over 20 lots of coin and sterling, a 19th century silver plate water cooler in Esthetic pattern, and silver jack knives.

Rounding out the auction are books, including a small library of interesting books; and fine arts, including oil paintings by S. Wandel and H. Connolly, Hudson Valley School painters, Currier & Ives prints, and etchings and a collection of art by Edward J. McLaughlin.

Real Estate

Connelly Realty, Robert J. Connelly, Broker and Auctioneer, will sell as one two parcels totaling 3.1 acres at 59 E Main St, Washingtonville, NY at noon on Saturday, July 14, 2007, with previews the previous Sunday, July 8 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, or by appointment. The opening bid is $350,000; the Estate reserves the right to one bid.

The property includes a c. 1840 11-room, 4 bedroom, 1 bath 2-story house on a laid stone foundation with a walk-up attic and walk-out basement, and a 2-story carriage barn with 2 horse stalls, a work shop and a walk-up loft. The vinyl-sided house, remodeled in the 1880s, has two porches, is heated by an oil-fired hot water system, and is provided with 110 v service and municipal water and sewers. The property is zoned office/residential.
